Baby me.
Cousins from SF MMSed me this picture about a week ago. Can you see why I miss them so much?

Spoiler Alert!

I, like everyone else, have my own take on spoilers. I tend to link my proclivity towards spoilers to a deep-seated desire for instant gratification. At least, that's the result of my self-diagnosis. I enjoy spoilers -- random fact number 14:

I love spoilers for movies or t.v. shows. Especially for movies that I'm kind of interested in seeing but not really. For example, scary movies. I enjoy reading which characters die and without even seeing the movie, I'll feel sad simply because I like the actor or actress.

I enjoy spoilers for various reasons. The most popular being that I love watching a story unfold. But I'm quite picky with the ones I read. If it's a movie with an expected grandiose, mind-bending twist, then I'll hold off. For example, I'll avoid spoilers for a movie like Shutter Island. But if it's a movie that I'm on the fence about and more than likely, I won't get the opportunity to check out while in theaters -- a quick 5 - 8 minute read  makes so much more sense to me than wasting $10 and an hour and half of my time. Now, this rule may be broken under special circumstances. For instance, I unfortunately read.. well, rather devoured as much information as I possibly could during the weeks leading up to the debut of the Dark Knight simply because I was so hyped for that movie. I still enjoyed the heck out of that movie regardless so there wasn't really a huge loss there.

LJ - LJ Memes

So I was recently inspired and delved back into my old LiveJournal account. I haven't accessed the account since 2007 and no, I won't provide you with the link. Besides, I privatized all my old, original entries so there's not much to see. I started this blog in hopes of crafting a more mature and cohesive collection of my thoughts. My LiveJournal account dates back to 2003 and recounts my early college years including thoughts on friends, relationships, my fraternity days, and daily notes. For me, it's a cringe-inducing read. Seriously. I average 3 to 4 groans/eye rolls per entry. Apparently my vocabulary consisted of words like "off the hizzy", "pimp", and apparently a whole lot of cursing. Don't judge.

However from time to time, when I am feeling courageous enough, I'll browse through my old entries. My hopes with this "LJ" series is to share with you a few of the "greatest hits" collection from my past blogging years. Enjoy!

Another Year Gone By

With acceptance letters being mailed out comes the familiar feeling of regret and dismay. This is always a difficult time of the year for me and I've blogged about it before in a previous entry titled "Pressure". This coupled with the fact that another year has just passed is just the icing on the triple layer cake of wompiness. 'Tis no bueno.

Gung Hay Fat Choy, my friends!

It's a new year with exciting new prospects. Chinese New Years Eve was spent with my family. We shared a lovely dinner at Chows, a restaurant that a good friend recommended. The food was nommy and we enjoyed our meal together.

Frigid 5-Mile Run

Yeah, you better believe I'm going to blog about this. Definitely filing this post under the "accomplishments" label.

So everyone pretty much knows about my recent weight loss and how health and fitness have taken a much higher priority in my life. I'm not going to lie. I'm still incredibly proud of all that I have achieved in a little over a year. Like I've stated in many posts, I've had the support of many friends who have encouraged and provided me with much needed insight and direction. This morning, I finished my first run ever, a 5-miler, with a time of 47:57 at 9:49/mile and I could not be any happier with the results.

Social Networks

Feeding our innate desire to overshare with others has been the springboard for perhaps the entire concept of social networking. From MySpace to Facebook and from Twitter to the very recent Google Buzz. Trailing the internet sensation that is all of these networks is the other buzz word of privacy. Only a mere two days after its launch, Buzz has encountered outrage from the Internets screaming over concerns regarding the reveal of private email addresses in the followers listing. I have always been a fan of social networking as it has seemingly always worked in my benefit. I don't have anything to really hide. I am not an avid drinker and so any embarrassing pictures of me were taken in a sober state (which is perhaps even more frightening). I have a lot of friends who during application season choose to hide their walls, deactivate their Facebook or even go as far as to purposely misspell their name to avoid being found online. With the url "darynlu.com", I have obviously chosen the opposite route.

PPOTD - Miscellanous Facebook Issues

According to Google Analytics, my most popular blog post has been my first "Pet Peeve Of The Day" - Facebook Wall Posts. As my writing and this blog evolve over time, I strive to build upon familiarity. It is for this reason why I am continuing with the PPOTD series with another mini rant on my lovely internet addiction to Facebook.

Oklahoma Mission of Mercy

This past Friday and Saturday, I spent my time volunteering at the Oklahoma Mission of Mercy (OKMOM). As a pre-dental graduate student, I have taken it upon myself to gain as much exposure to the field of dentistry as I possibly can. Originally, I had made plans to volunteer for the Friday afternoon shift and then fly out early the next morning to Washington DC to visit family and friends and attend ASDA National Dental Student Lobby Day at the Capitol. These plans were unfortunately scrapped when my original Saturday morning flight was canceled along with my rescheduled flight on Sunday due to 'snowmaggeddon' slamming the East coast. While I have been a bit dismayed about not being able to attend the event in Washington, I made the best of my situation and dedicated another day to volunteering in Tulsa for a great cause.

Deal Breakers

Continuing on with the theme of "soul mates".. for the longest time, I have wanted to post a blog describing what I am looking for in a relationship. Something along the lines of what a good friend of mine Nathan has done very well. Unfortunately, I myself have not yet been able to do so without coming off seemingly needy, whiny, unrealistic, and desperate. Indeed I am my own worst critic.
